Self-filming in the digital craze era

Ever wanted to prove a point, create a captivating story, or sell an idea so great that your audience have no choice but to be hooked? Video is absolutely everything- it's the reason you bought that pair of denim jeans last month, a means of using "how-to-videos" to navigate life hacks, a way to say Hello and Goodbye to your family far away.

Recently I released a documentary titled Styling Sustainability aimed at exploring the perspectives from small-scale sustainable fashion brand owners, student consumers, and thrift store founders on their experiences with and involvement in Cape Town's sustainable fashion industry. In order to capture the essence of some interviewees that were beyond my locational reach, I created visual guidebooks for them to use in order to film themselves, rather than having myself film them. Visual guidebooks are an amazing way to achieve an organic and experimental style of filming and allow your interviewees, models, family and friends that you may be using in your videos to showcase a little bit of their own creative expression.

Take a look at these guidebooks for some inspo and ideas about how to reach and include movement and modelling film of people from varying locations both locally and globally in your next short feature, insta story, documentary or whichever video medium you please! Even though these examples are orientated toward a fashion focus- you can make use of the angles, shots and relevant research info included. You're free to use these guidebooks but please do not republish them under your own name. If you'd like to use them commercially, please contact me or send me an email at: caitlinbws@gmail.com
